El espejismo del vidrio, fue el nombre que se le ha dado en la Edad Media y en el Barroco a una forma de depresión. Las víctimas fueron obsesivo-compulsivas, impulsados por temores irracionales, y se imaginaron a sí mismos como si fueran vidrio. Tan generalizada fue la condición que entró en la literatura mundial, la filosofía y la historia. Carlos VI de Francia tenía costillas de hierro cosidas en su ropa para protegerse de la muerte y supuestamente viajó acolchado de paja y se negó a sentarse por temor a que su peso corporal fractura sus nalgas. El síndrome provoca una separación psicológica entre la realidad y la imaginación, entre una fuerza y una vulnerabilidad que todos experimentamos a veces. Ningún otro material como el vidrio tiene la capacidad de combinar los opuestos, y es esta dualidad la inspiración de esta exposición de arte contemporáneo, artefactos y objetos científicos que cuentan la historia de los intentos humanos de conciliar los dos mundos: físico y mental.
La exposición se realizará en el National Glass Centre desde el 20 de mayo al 3 de octubre.
The Glass Delusion, was the name given in the late Middle Ages and Baroque times to a form of depression. Sufferers were obsessive, compulsive, driven by irrational fears, and imagined themselves to be made of glass. So pervasive was the condition that it entered world literature, philosophy and history. Charles VI of France had iron ribs sewn into his clothes to protect himself from breaking and victims allegedly travelled padded in straw and refused to sit down fearing their body weight would fracture their buttocks. The syndrome evokes a psychological separation between reality and imagination, between a strength and a vulnerability that we all experience at times. More than any other material glass has the ability to combine opposites and it is this duality that is the inspiration for this exhibition of contemporary art, artefacts and scientific objects that tell the story of human attempts to reconcile the physical and mental worlds.
